Dissertation

I'm going to blame dissertation for having failed - again - to post on Friday as I had promised myself. I was in the library until about 7.30pm on Friday (largely waiting for the university server to stop crashing so I could get my exam results) and then the rest of the weekend I have mostly crashed out and watched the 6 Nations (go Ireland!).

Anyway, at the moment my life is looking at this:

While my head goes like this:

stereo skifcha from xgabberx on Vimeo.

But what I want to see is this:

(In my head I often imagine the elegiac poets as 19th century Parisian painters. Therefore this painting is 100% relevant to my dissertation!)
I wanted to do a post about jewellery in the Fayuum portraits... maybe tomorrow...

Goodnight!

It's Real

Friday post fail!
Trying to catch up asap!

Last Sunday I finally had a much needed haircut at  Sinead Kelly London. I want to upload 'Before' and 'After' pictures... just because it's funny... but the cut is for a competition so I have to wait a bit. So I will do a proper post in a couple of weeks but for now here are a couple of pictures from the day:

So I took the first picture to show mid-cut. I've got a number 2 shave at the nape of the neck which I love and the front is still at its' original length here.
Some mood board pictures. Rooney Mara's Vanity Fair cover was a major inspiration (here).
And soooo much make-up! Seriously, that is less than half of it! And you can see a bit of the lovely interior of the salon with the fantastic mirrors and flocked wallpaper.

Also last night I went to a gig for the first time in ages... which is probably why I completely forgot to post. I saw Real Estate at the Deaf Institute and it was really great - I even had a little chat with the bassist who was super friendly and came out to mingle and have a beer with the audience!

I took one rubbish picture:

My favorite song is Wonder Years but they have not done a video for that so here is 'It's Real':

More to come!

Victorian Dandy Ladies

At some point last year (I wrote it down as 25/11/11 but I can't seem to find it) BBC Radio4's Woman's Hour mentioned a Victorian stage performance I had never heard of before - Drag Kings!  It's fairly self explanatory what this involves (women performing dressed as men if you are really struggling) and I have heard of women in Japan dressing up as young businessmen and going to clubs but I had never considered uptight Victorian's society's reaction to ladies cross-dressing!

To get you in the mood, have a listen of this - not directly related but I am loving The Correspondants at the moment so there!

May I present to you... Vesta Tilley (aka Matilda Alice Powles)!

What a dapper chap!

Yes, I am just linking the pics from her Wiki page but check out the Beetle Jewellery!

Ella Shields is another male impersonator who wrote this parody of one of Vesta Tilley's most popular songs:

A third male impersonator of the time that I would like to hear more about Miss Hettie King who was actually on BBC's Desert Island Discs programme on 14th April 1969 but it is not available to listen at the moment which is sad...

Slightly off topic and going a bit further back in time... tomorrow is the 150th anniversary of the death of Elizabeth Siddal, the flame-haired Pre-Raphaelite beauty.

This looks like it might be a pretty cool blog in general but this is a nice detailed post about Miss Siddal...

That's all for now!

How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?

I've not been very good at posting regularly but I shall now attempt to post something or other every Friday.
This is my resolution for this term (as well as magically completing my dissertation before midnight on the last day and somehow getting a first.)

I have attempted precisely 3 animations in my life. They have all been mediocre to say the least. If I needed any further confirmation that I lack talent in this area, Anna Ginsburg's animation for Bombay Bicycle Club's 'How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep?' would be it.

Anna has also made a really clear and interesting sketchbook blog about the process which led to the video (this is sort of what I originally meant for my blog to be like)

It is just lovely. I particularly like the copper curls. But I do have a bit of a thing for copper curls so I would. It also makes me want to watch The Science of Sleep again...

(it didn't remind me of this scene particularly but I have become increasingly obsessed with furry onesies... I might give in and buy a Kigu!)
