Eros & Thanatos

Happy Valentines Day!
(for 15 min ago)
And if you think its a lame commercial holiday then I completely agree and I really could not care less about this 'Valentine' guy so I am going to bring in some Classical 'love' stories I have been looking at this week.
(I say 'love' because in mythology it seems to be... umm..... let's say 'surprise sex' a lot of the time but I let us not get bogged down in the ethics of these matters.)

Primaticcio, Francesco; Raub der Helena
Tip 1: If your relationship starts with you being bundled into some foreign prince's ship you may find yourself in a somewhat awkward political situation (particularly if you are married to a powerful king)

Jacques-Louis David; The Love of Helen and Paris (detail)
Tip 2: Do not trust the man who wears either a gnome hat (/Phrygian cap) OR is naked except for sandals. It is worth noting that in this case, two negatives do not create a positive. This can only end badly.

John William Waterhouse; Jason and Medea

Tip 3: Guys; if she starts mixing poisons soon after you meet, maybe don't have kids, they might not last long
Girls; no guy is ever worth murdering your little brother/foreign kings/your children for. You are a strong and independent woman - get in your serpent drawn carriage and take on the world!

(btw I love Medea and think that she is thoroughly misunderstood)

I tried to put some Greekiness into my Valentines Day. Unfortunately I cannot write in Greek so I am not sure if this is correct but its the thought that counts!

More to come!

This is how 'The Mummy' changed my life:

You probably remember this film. Or at least its rapidly deteriorating sequels 'The Mummy Returns' and the unforgivable 'The Mummy, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' which doesn't even have my belovéd Rachel Weisz and has some sort of second rate replacement called Maria Bello.

As a rather flimsy Indiana Jones wannabe film with dodgy graphics and dodgier jokes you may wonder how on earth it changed my life. Well its quite simple. It's got ancient history and jewellery in it. And the beautiful Rachel. And its set in the 1920s with all the lovely clothes and suitcases and things.

It inspired me in two ways;
1.) It showed me that you can be a massively geeky librarian type but still be sort of kick-ass and cool in your own little way, "Take that, Bembridge scholars!"
2.) I think that the swarming scarab beetles in this film were what originally made me think that a swarm of metal insects would make pretty cool jewellery

And now, let us take a moment to appreciate Evie and her outfits:
A delightful ensemble for visiting Cairo's inmates: camel maxi-skirt, men's shirt with loose silk scarf, knitted cardigan and straw hat!
This is to show the earrings, and also what was probably a very awkward kiss (this scene was on the first day of filming)
A better view of the knitted cardigan and hat followed by Evie's traveling attire, trés chic (but I have one of those sorts of suitcases and there is now way she would be able to carry them unless they are empty!)
"The only thing that scares me, Mr O'Connell, is your manners"
(I want her jacket)
 (and I want her nightie)
(and, to be honest, I want her)
pictures belong to Universal Pictures etc. etc.

And so whenever I feel a bit demotivated by an essay or a bit of a boffin when someone asks me what my degree is, I take heart in the thought that one day, maybe, I will be involved in the awakening of an Greek god and my encyclopedic knowledge of mythology will save the world and with many japes and capers along the way!

Cheerio!

Testing... Testing.. One-two, one-two, WHOO!

Hello! Welcome!

Ok... so I'm going to try to do a blog. This feels a bit intimidating!

My name is Yasmin Everley and my life is divided between my love of Classics (which I study at uni) and of jewellery (which I design). Maybe I can bring these two interests together and unite them like Cadmus and Harmonia!

I decided to start a blog partly as an online sketchbook to collect images and articles and little things I find on the computer and also to sort of show where I am coming from with my jewellery. Hopefully you will find it interesting, maybe you'll like my stuff.

More to come!
